In the English language there is only the name 'owl' for both the male and female of the species. If you want to know if there is a name just for a male owl then you are going to have to look to the Spanish language to give you the answer. This is the one language which has a different name for the male and female owl, the male being 'buho' and the female being 'lechuza'.

If you are writing a piece on owls and simply want to know if there is a different term for the male and female, it is going to be best if you simply write 'male owl' as you are not going to want to begin changing languages as you are writing as it is likely that the reader is not going to want to know what the name is for the animals in Spanish. If you are studying the animals or are simply interested in them you are not going to have to learn the Spanish names for the animals as this is going to be completely unnecessary.

It is only within certain languages that the name is going to be different, so if you cannot find the different names for the male and female, you can assume that there aren't any! Even though there are going to be many different obvious differences between the male and female owls, this doesn't mean that there is going to be a specifically different name to ensure that the two genders are separate.

Within the English language there are no certain names and at least you are not going to have to learn them any differently then a male and female owl. Of course, there is going to be a specific name for baby owls and different stages of the owl's lives, but when it comes to the different genders it is as simple as possible.
