Flagyl contains metronidazole and is used to treat bacterial and protozoan infections. Flagyl is an prescription drug. FDA has not approved this drug for animal use but vets are prescribing as extra label drug. Flagyl is indicated for infections caused by some bacteria, Giardia, Trichominas etc. Its dose in dogs is 10-60 mg per Kg body weight of dog 1-4 times a day depending upon severity of the problem. But this drug should be used under the supervision of a qualified vet.

My 20lbs sheltie was treated with 500mg of Metronidazole. She developed complications and died a week later. Do you think she was given the wrong dosage?

NEVER give any animal human medication with out first consulting a veterinarian. You could kill it.

Flagyl is regularly prescribed by veterinarians for dogs for many ailments, especially diarrhea because it is not only an antibiotic, but is anti-inflammatory as well. It is indeed also a human medication.
