As you may have already heard, wasps live in a hierarchy where worker wasps cater to the queen wasp.
The worker wasps die out during the winter months, however only the queen wasp survives by hibernation.
She does this be either occupying the old nest, or creating a special, much smaller-scale 'hibernation cell' that keep her secure until Spring.
