All breeds have the same heat cycle. Female dogs go into heat every six months, which makes it roughly twice a year. Even after your female dog has had puppies, she will go into heat six months from the last time she was in heat. If you're saying the puppies were born four months ago, and we assume that she got pregnant at the end of her heat cycle, that makes it roughly five months since her last heat cycle started, so I would be careful about making sure she does not hang around adult males.

Having said that, unless her vulva has changed in size from after she had birth, or her breasts had gone back to their normal size and are now getting bigger again, I do not think she is pregnant yet. Usually it takes a few weeks after the dog gets pregnant for the breasts to change in size, and it is not possible for all that have happened so quickly.

I would suggest you watch her from now and keep her away from males.

Dogs' cycles are as different as humans. The average heat to heat cycle is six months. Some dogs can go anywhere from 4 months to yearly. My dog is generally 9 months every cycle. It all depends on the dog, though the rule of thumb is 6 months after the last heat. Dogs that go into heat every 4 aren't always fertile every heat.

And signs to look for are swollen vulva, change in appetite, excessive cleaning of vulva area, change in sleep pattern, though except for the swollen vulva these can all be different for each dog also, just like cramps and cravings for chocolate for humans.

My bitch just had a litter 3 weeks ago. Can she be in heat already? She has a dark discharge that looks like blood.

Dogs can come in to heat after 4 months of giving birth to puppies. Pregnancy can not affect or delay next heat cycle in dogs. It occurs on schedule time. Dogs can have two heat periods in a year and each heat period can be of 3-4 weeks with an average of 3 weeks. Heat periods in dogs are repeated after every 6 months regardless of pregnancy. Both heat cycle are 6 months apart whether they become pregnant or not.

Dogs can have 2 heat cycles in a year time. This does not depends upon, pregnancy, false pregnancy, or delivery of puppies. Getting pregnant and whelping after 63 days in dogs can not delay or postpone next heat cycle that can occur after normal interval of 6 months or 24 weeks. If you count 63 days of gestation and 2 weeks of last heat cycle, then your dog may come in heat after 3 1/2 to 4 months after delivery of puppies.

A dog usually can come in to heat twice in a year or after every six months. Dogs can come in to heat period on time regardless of giving birth to puppies. So, your dog will come in to heat 6 months after previous heat cycle regardless of the fact she gave birth after last heat cycle.

Heat period in dogs usually starts at the age of 4-18 months but it depends upon  breed. Estrus in dogs can last for 3-4  weeks.

Pregnancy in dogs does not delay the heat cycle. Dogs whether pregnant or not can get two heat cycles in a year and each heat cycle can be of 3 weeks. In case of pregnancy, gestation can be of of 58-69 days with an average of 63-66 days. After the delivery of puppies, a dog can come in to heat cycle after 4 months and in case of no pregnancy, heat cycle begins after 6 months.

Your dog goes into heat every six months. So count back when she went in heat to start with. Count six months from that month and you will now when she goes in to heat again.

Whenever her normal cycle would be without the pregnancy. If it's a breed that goes every 6 or 7 month's then it should be around then from the last heat. How is she doing and what did the vet say about the other thing (based on this question I gather it wasn't bad enough for an emergency spay :-). If that was a prolapse it could be VERY dangerous for her to get pregnant again. Hope thing's are going well so far.

Don't forget, a few breeds like Basenji's only come in heat once a
year.

And a lot of dogs are not exactly every 6 months coming in
heat.  Often, many will come in every  5 months or every 7 months.

They need to be observed carefully when one also owns males!

It depends somewhat on the breed... But for most breeds, generally around six months after the birth ..
