NO harm in having a dog as a guard dog ... As long as they are treated right and are also respected and given love

The first and most important thing is that if you want a dog specifically for the purpose of being a guard dog, then you need to buy the right breed. The fact is that if your dog has a friendly, good natured disposition, it might do more harm than good to try and train it to be a guard dog. You need to check the breed characteristics of the dog you want as training will depend on the breed.

Like any training, you need to reward behaviours that you would like to see repeated and punish those that you want to stop. You need to train your dog to be indifferent toward other dogs, particularly of the opposite sex. They need to learn to ignore cats as well since it could cause distractions. You might want your dog to stay quiet until an intruder actually attempts to get into your property before attacking. It is probably best to train them to not chase after the intruder.

You can start training your dog even as a puppy. They tend to retain lessons learned in the earlier stages of their life and it helps build on your dogs personality.

You should NEVER get a dog for the sole/only real purpose of being a guard dog. They are not security systems, they are living beings in need of social interaction. Shame on you

You for real??? Shame on you??? Lol my dog is my best friend but his job is to protect me and my family and lay his life for ours. That is his job, i hope that never has to happen but that is his purpose. I have pet dogs for the family but my German Rot is still happy and very loved but he was bred for protection. A hound is bred for hunting I own a few Julys which are fox hounds they make horrid pets but great hunters... So is that bad to own a dog just for hunting purposes?
