About two inches in height, six pounds in weight and a longer nose. But, in fact, it is not quite as simple as all that. For there are four varieties of King Charles Spaniel: the King Charles, the Tricolour, the Ruby and the Blenheim.

In reality, these four are the same dog, all descended from the same common source, but in different colour schemes. Although named after King Charles II, who with his brother, James II, they merely championed a breed that had been in existence for some time already.

For the record, the King Charles Spaniel is a glossy black with bright tan markings; the Tricolour is white with black patches and tan markings; the Ruby is a rich chestnut red; and the Blenheim white with chestnut red patches, wide white blaze, and the famous red spot on the forehead.

The King Charles Cavalier is a larger version of the spaniel and probably nearer to the original type of King Charles' time than the present day spaniel version.
