The poor old snake has something of a bad reputation, but is in fact, not quite as bad as is often portrayed. There are over 2,400 types of snake but only about 400 of them are poisonous, leaving 2000 types of snake which do not poison to kill their prey.
However, this does not necessarily mean that they are 'cosy and cuddly' since boas and pythons do not poison their victims, but instead choose to squeeze or 'constrict' their enemy to the death.
Other snakes may not poison their prey but will simply sneak up on it and kill it with its teeth. They cannot chew and swallow their victims whole.
The most venomous snakes include the cobra, mamba, krait and tiger snake. Members of the viper family, such as bushmaster, rattlesnake, adders, cottonmouth and sidewinder are also extremely poisonous. But all other types of snake are less 'deadly' although probably best avoided !

The answer is ZERO. There's no such thing as a "poisonous" snake, since a poison is a toxic substance that must be either swallowed or inhaled in order to cause harm. You can eat any snake in the world and the meat will not harm you, unless the snake itself was poisoned by something it had eaten. Less than 40% of the world's known snake species are venomous. A "venom" is a biological chemical that is manufactured in specialized glands of some animals, that can be injected into another animal. That means that over half of the world's snakes are non-venomous, and largely harmless to humans.

I gets me that children programs and other nature programs most of the time say that certain snakes poisonous etc etc. People need to get their facts right. Poison is ingested or inhaled. Venom is injected or if it gets into a cut on your skin then your also in trouble. All snakes have venom whether its dangerous to humans or not. Most if not all venom's can be ingested and not make you sick/kill you. But if you have ulcers or cuts inside our mouth/stomach then that venom can kill you as it then gets into your bloodstream.

I think 2 snakes are poisonous, the rest are venomous and non venomous. The difference being that if you eat the 2 poisonous snakes then will become poorly, and possibly die. Where as with the other snakes they are safe to eat.
