Dry heaves may indicate that your pet has internal parasites, internal food infection, food allergy, bloat, liver dysfunction, or has swallowed a poisonous substance.

If there is no vomiting and diarrhea, and you are confident that the dog has not eaten anything that could be toxic to it, then we can move beyond quite a few of the above illnesses. It could also indicate that there is a blockage which is causing the dog to heave to try and remove it. Give the dog simple meals of boiled chicken and rice for the next 24 hours to see if his condition improves, if it does not, this could be Bloat.

Bloat, or Dastric Dilation Volvulus, is a potentially life-threatening condition in dogs. The dog's stomach becomes twisted, trapping air and fluid, and progressively gets larger. Left untreated, this can lead to shock and ultimately threat. Since this is not something that can be ruled out online, I would suggest you run your dog to the local vet to get scans done to see if this is the case.

He may just have a cold or a cough.  It is good if you can keep an extra eye on him and you brought him in the house.  Where he was, was there anything he could have got into or ate that was not good for him?  Also, is he eating and drinking ok?  If he is that is a good sign.  Make sure he stays hydrated is the best thing you can do for him.  Also, when was the last time you dewormed him?  If you don't get him his shots because they are too expensive you should at least deworm him on a routine basis.  I would call the vet and ask how often they recommend it.  You don't have to take him to the vet for that.  Just go buy the dewormer.  It is only a few dollars.  It comes in flavors usually and in a syringe.  You just squirt it in the dogs mouth.  It is easy to do if you have not did it before.  Animals can catch a lot of different things outside.  My dog lives outside too.  Don't feel bad.  It could be anything.  Your local vet can give you some more advice for free over the phone usually with out having to take the dog in.  Even though they will probably recommend it.  If they don't try calling a different one.  Good luck and take care.

Your dog needs to be examined by a veterinarian.  The sniffing could be from a rhinitis (inflammation of the nose) secondary to allergies, nasal foreign body, abscessed teeth roots or nasal mass.  The dry heaving is not usually associated with nasal irritation.  Your veterinarian will also examine his oral cavity to make sure the abnormality is not in the oral cavity.

He gags when he lays down? What breed and how old and is it more of a funny sounding 'cough' or 'wheeze' or kinda like he's got a hairball or something? It's really hard to explain. Is it a large chested dog? Has he always done this or for how long?
It may be nothing or it may indicate a heart problem. Could he just be grunting? Is it hard for him to get up and down? It could also be allergies. Is it actually his belly? Does his belly seem a little big to you? I'd probably have him see the doctor just in case so you can have some peace of mind and in case it's a problem. If you can tape it with your phone or something it could help instead of trying to explain it.

The bold spot sounds like a hot spot and to treat this you can give him some benadryl and put some hydrocorizone cream on it and for the dry heaving he might have ate some grass. Try giving him some delited milk and see if this helps. Good luck!!!!!
