Your hamster definitely sounds sick and may be dying.  Losing his balance, abdominal/anal enlargement and not eating are not signs of loneliness in hamsters.  This hamster needs to be examined by a veterinarian to have this problem diagnosed and treated before he gets progressively worse.

My hamster died the other day about 21-22mths. Did I do something wronge she was a syrian. When we got her we got her so many different treats, came out her cage every night for 2hrs for a cuddle and ran in most of our rooms on the floor.she fell of the small unit a few times, and the wardrobe what went to the ceiling in june. We cleaned her out a lot gave her fruit and veg, sometimes she had dry biscuits, chick, ham and not often bacon or a bit of a chip. She was very happy and sociable came out in the day time sometimes. I kissed and loved her loads very spoilt.she's been with us though very good and bad times.we losed our 1 week old baby son end sept, we didn't pay her hardley any attention didn't clean her out so much and didn't treat her very much, got a dog to. I noticed when I got the dog her heart beat fast but we protected her from the dog, 1 day they were in the same room for 20mins the dog was very tame and wasn't to bothered with the hamster. Pink the hamster got sick and died 11 days after getting sick. We took her to the vet when her heart was beating so fast she was still with eyes closed and was losing her balanced I was so upset, vet said old age gave her a injection and she picked up. I gave her loads a treats, mash fresh sweetcorn proboctic powder[fibre vit c healthy bact and fluffy bedding in case to cold. Gave her loads of cuddles she had a small walk and got her out as much as poss made sure she didn't over do it, she was a bit more happier. Then the other night she looked unwell again and went to her bed and looked all weak and ill, I got her out she walked a little and I kissed cuddled and talked to her,her breathing was heavy and clicking loadly it was so sad and upsetting I held her until she died before she died she was very frightened and had a attack and made a load noise and calapsed.when we buried her underneath lower part of tummy[maybe vagina] was red and spilt[the vet the other week said she had no lumps and didn't noticed the red tum.pink had bleeding a couple of times on my hand when I held her and blood in her wee the last few weeks of her life. What did I do wronge I miss her so much.I thought she would of lived a lot longer she use to be very happy and spoilt. Was she sad and lonely cause we didn't pay her much attention the last couple of mths and stress and shock from the dog.

Yes don't get him a friend, Syrians live alone in then wild. My hamsters are kinda like that, but when I put a female near them (to mate), they go crazy and climb up the cage and try to chew the bars off. That's then only time I see them hyper. They are usually sleeping when I check on them. But they are nocturnal. I usually fill their bowls half way, because one them takes all of the food up to his nest and the other one waits until his nest is empty. His bowl is usually full. You should check where he sleeps to see if he has food there. If you don't have a wheel in the cage maybe you should put one there.

No he just needs a new environment and more things to keep him up, like toys and such. Check with a vet also.

His bum is probably bigger from growing, but I'm not sure about him not eating or scramming when you want to take him out. I would just leave alone for a while and see what happens.

Not very nice. I had three hamsters and witnessed them dying. My first hamster was named humphery my second was named angle and my third was named brookie. Angle died in october 2009 she died in the place she loved best and that was her bed. Me my mum and sister were with her when she died. Humphery passed away in febuary 2010 she died in her red hammock. I was with her the night before she died till the minute she took her last breath she died in my mams arms on the way to the vet. Brookie then died in  april 2010 I was with him for his last final moments. He died in my bed all tucked in with my whole family surrounding him. Angle and humphery died of old age while brookie on the other hand took a sudden heart attack because one minute he was spinning on his wheel the next minute he was out the back garden in a hole in the ground. At least none of my hamsters died alone.
A hamster usually slows up about a week before it dies and then when the time is right it will start rocking in one spot until finally it screams and then it opens its mouth wide until finally it drops.R.I.P humphery brookie and angle.

Do not get him a 'friend' it is very likely that they will fight. Syrians will often fight to the death if housed together. Take the little guy to a vet. Unfortunately, having him since december doesn't guarantee that he is not very old. If you bought him at a pet store, he could have been there for a very long time.

I'm sure hes not dying. He might be just not used to you because you havn't had him for a while. Try things like giving him food from your hand and not just to put it straight in his bowl because it means that you mean him no harm and you want to give him food. Also about his bum getting big its because hes a boy and hes growing. My hamster has a big bum too so don't worry.

I think he's lonely, since you say he's not really old, it could be that he is sick also, get him a friend, and see if he feels better after that. Hope this helps. Good luck.
