Like majority of dog breeds, first heat cycle in  Pitbull  starts at the age of 6 months and she can come in to heat twice in year. Heat cycle can be of 2-4 weeks with average of 3 weeks. All vets recommend not to breed dogs in first heat cycle because dogs are not physically mature at this age. Breeding should be done after 2 or 3 heat cycle and complete fitness tests.

Heat cycle in dogs starts with vaginal bleeding that can last for 10-12 days. Mating does not take place at this time that is possible when bleeding is ceased or reduced and dog show flagging.

Not only pit bulls, almost all breeds of the dog can go in to their first heat cycle after getting puberty. This is achieved at the age of 4-12 months with an average of 6-9 months. Some small breeds can get their heat cycle as early as 4 months and some breeds as late as 12 months. Heat cycle in dogs can be of 3-4 weeks with an average of 3 weeks or 21 days. This heat cycle is repeated 2 times in a year regardless of pregnancy.
