The largest rats in the world are called, African giant pouched rats, they grow to a length of 65 to 91 cm. But most people are familiar with the Norway rat, the largest one caught in a city or on record weighed 2.4 pounds! You see most Norway rats weigh about 10 to 18 ounces, and can grow up to 18 inches long. So this guy was much bigger.

New Rat Species Discovered in New Guinea

A rodent described as being "five times the size of a typical city rat" has been discovered in Papua, New Guinea. The 1.4 kg Mallomys giant rat was found in the "lost world" region where scientists discovered dozens of new plants and animals in 2005. The giant rats came into the camps of the scientists and seemed to exhibit no fear of humans.
