Our hamster developed a lump on the side of her neck, by the next day it got bigger and was near it's throat, she wasn't eating much, or barely drinking, people told me to leave it alone and let it die, I felt so bad watching it suffer so I decided if I got home from work and she was still alive I would take her to the vet, plus she is the pet of my 10 year old son, what am I teaching my son if I just give up.  Long story short we took her to the vet, he drained a 2 ounce abcess but did not promise it was not a tumor, we had to wait, if it grew back it was a tumor and we would have to put her to sleep, after a week of antibiodics, lump is gone, no sign of it coming back, she is back to her old self.  The cost I found an awesome vet, not a crook total charge was $71 If I would have had to bring her back to put her to sleep he was doing it fee of charge.  There are still good vets out there that don't want to rob you blind and I am glad we didn't give up on buttercup, hopefully we'll have a good couple of years left with her, she is a little fighter.

A lump can be anything, may be a Cyst, a Tumor, or Abscess. But if it appeared overnight, then most probably it is haematoma. Hematoma is a condition where blood starts to flow from the damaged vessels towards some particular injured point. That place swells due to this reason. Haematoma is a result of a fall, or a back knock. So take your hamster to a vet soon.

My hamster grew this weird lump on his side which grew to the size of his head. Don't read this is if your squeamish! The skin over it got stretched to far and split. We decided the best thing to do was to give him some sleeping tablets as he would have died on the way to the vets and be put down there anyway. After quite a large dose he fell asleep, BUT SURVIVED! He is still alive now but his lump never went away. I would say your hamster has a cyst or an abscess. Or food in his mouth;)
