I use clumping litter and only dump it completely every few months or so. I pretty much base it on odor or having company! I do use an antibacterial cleaner, though, which has never been a problem as far as the cats finding it unappealing.

Cat Fancy magazine recommends completely changing litter (clumping) once a month and only using water to clean it out. They say cats don't like a really sweet smelling box. Mine have never objected, but some cats may not like it I suppose.

First of all, you should know that your cats excrement should be removed daily (which you are probably doing anyway). Depending on how many cats you have, the type of litter you are using and how many litter boxes you have, how often you change or replace the litter can vary. As a guideline, twice a week should be enough for clay type litter. However, if the litter starts to smell or you notice it wet more often, then you should change it there and then. Make sure to wash the litter box also, using just soapy water, as to not make the litter box harmful or less appealing to your cat or cats.

I found this link here which also has some great ideas about setting up and maintaining your litter box.

My old cat lets me know when her box is dirty.  She will pee on the carpet to let me know.  As soon as I throw out the old liter and put in fresh, she goes right to it and continues being good until it's too dirty or smelly for her once again.

Once a week I would say but if the animal has done its buisness quite a lot I would change it straight away because it would get very smelly and spread around your house which is a very unpleasent smell that I don't thik you would want to live with xxxxx :) xxxxx

Well when we had 18 cats we had 6 litter boxs and had to change them 2 times a day. But something tells me you don't have this many. With one remove the poo every day and change and wash the litter box once a week. For two remove the poo everyday change and wash litter box once a week. With three remove poo every day change and wash litter box every 4 days. With 4 remove poo every day change and wash litter box every 2 days. With 5 or more remove the poo daily and change and wash litter box daily. That should cover every thing you need
