Yes, they can take various types of opiates/opioids. However the dose depends on body weight and make sure it's JUST oxycodone. Tylenol (acitemenophen), which is a common addition to many pain killers, is toxic to dogs.

I wouldn't suggest giving it to a dog without first consulting a vet though. Because there can be complications with your pet that you may not even be aware of. But in general, yes dogs can take oxycodone, but again dosage varies by weight and human dosages don't typically apply.

To answer the question is Oxycodone the same as OxyContin? Somebody answered above, "yes".  Oxycodone is the main ingredient on OxyContin, however OxyContin is a timed release medication, recently Purdu Pharma changed the formulary for OxyContin that makes the pill harder to crush or tamper with it.

I've had my dog since 1998.  At that time I was making good money.  Since then I've been involved in litigation that has financially devastated my wife and I.  We have both been disabled and are trying to live on a monthly income which is the same as my weekly income when we got our dog from the pound.  She has had excellent health care and the best quality foods her entire life, but now it is difficult to take her to the vet, when just walking in to their office costs $45.  Sometime people's life situations change, but that shouldn't require losing a member of the family.

I agree, and understand. My dog ate a bug or maybe an ant, now he's in pain and pacing the house. My heart breaks that I can't take him in, he's my hero, I would be lost without him.

The question was simply if dogs can take oxycodone.  Please stay on track and keep the answers simple, because that's what it is.  The answer is simply yes.  Not only is the acetaminophen bad for their liver, it's bad for ours too.  I am disabled, having Crohns Disease since 8 yo, and was taking high doses of Percocet, having Hep C.

Anonymous , If it's just oxycodone, then yes, absolutely yes., answered

Acetaminophen is bad for livers in both dogs and humans...hello!

I have Hep C, and unfortunately, I had to suggest the pure oxycodone to my specialist.  Pretty sad. Huh!  Shouldn't he have thought of it???

I prefer opiates over synthetics as you just can't improve on Mother Nature.  I've taken tramadol, and it sucks, so I threw it out.  I hate giving that crap to dogs as well.

That's ignorant. Many people have unexpected financial woes and have children. You don't tell them they should suddenly get rid of their children do you? Or are you that big of a f#$king jerk that you do? To many of us pet owners, our dogs ARE loved and cherished the same as children are and just because we aren't rich and have financial problems, doesn't mean we shouldn't have them! I hope you one day know what it feels like to not be able to help a loved one in pain you self righteous asshole!

Wow I so agree. I went through a long battle with cancer and my dogs were my driving force to fight! Now I am disabled and cannot work and one of my little dogs broke her leg and the tramadol the vet gave her makes her vomit. I cannot afford to take her back again but have Tylenol free oxycodone of my own and wanted to know how much to give her. Then I see some person advising, if you cannot afford the vet, you shouldn't have a dog?!! My dogs didn't give up on ME! How ignorant! Financial woes are temporary. I committed to my dogs for life! They aren't disposable!!
